Machine Smells Bad or
Leaves Black Residue?
Those black flakes aren’t dirt—they are mold. Learn why your washing machine smells and how to clean it properly in Mysuru & Bengaluru.
The “Black Flake” Mystery
It’s frustrating. You wash clothes to make them clean, but they come out smelling musty with tiny black specks stuck to them. In humid cities like Mysuru, this is common.
What is it? It is usually “Biofilm”—a slimy combination of detergent residue, fabric softener, and bacteria growing in the hidden parts of your drum.
Why Does It Smell?
Modern machines use less water. If you use too much detergent or only wash with cold water, the soap doesn’t dissolve completely.
- Mold Growth: Thrives in the damp rubber door seal.
- Detergent Sludge: Builds up under the drum where you can’t see it.
- Hard Water Scale: Traps dirt and bacteria (Common in Bangalore).
4-Step Deep Cleaning Guide
Follow these steps to banish the smell and residue.
1. The Rubber Gasket (Seal)
Pull back the rubber fold at the door. You’ll likely find grey slime. Wipe it vigorously with a cloth soaked in white vinegar or bleach. Dry it completely.
2. The Detergent Drawer
Remove the drawer completely. Black mold loves to hide behind it. Scrub the drawer and the slot inside the machine with a toothbrush.
3. The Drain Filter
Located at the bottom right. Open it (have a towel ready for water). Clear out lint, coins, and hair. This is often the source of the “rotten egg” smell.
4. The Drum Clean Cycle
Add Descaling Powder or 500ml Vinegar directly into the drum. Run the “Tub Clean” or “Cotton 90°C” cycle empty.
Identifying the Residue
What exactly is sticking to your clothes?
| Appearance | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Black/Grey Flakes | Mold & Biofilm | Hot wash with Vinegar/Bleach |
| White/Chalky Powder | Undissolved Detergent | Use Liquid Detergent, less quantity |
| Hard Brown Crust | Hard Water Scale | Use Descaling Powder (Acidic) |
| Oily Spots | Fabric Softener buildup | Reduce softener usage |
Pro Tip for Mysuru & Bangalore
Hard Water Alert: Our water has high mineral content. This makes detergent stickier. We highly recommend using a Descaling Powder (like IFB/Samsung descaler) once every 2 months instead of just vinegar.
Prevent It Coming Back
Leave Door Open
After every wash, leave the door ajar for 2 hours. Airflow prevents mold.
Switch to Liquid
Powder clumps easily in cold water. Liquid detergent dissolves fully.
Monthly Hot Wash
Bacteria die at 60°C+. Run one hot cycle (towels/sheets) weekly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is black residue harmful?
It can irritate sensitive skin and indicates high bacteria levels. It should be cleaned immediately.
Can I use Dettol to clean the drum?
Dettol kills bacteria but doesn’t remove the physical sludge. You need an acidic cleaner (Vinegar/Descaler) to break the grime.
My machine still smells after cleaning. What now?
The mold might be behind the drum where you can’t reach. This requires professional dismantling and deep cleaning by Aspire.
